Hi Girlfriends,
I’ve spent way too many hours this month looking at
20 years’ worth of Girlfriend back issues when I really should have been doing other stuff... and it’s been brilliant! I remember some of those covers so well that looking at them again was kinda like going back in time.
So, I dug out my 1988 diary to see what I was up to when GF was first created. Here’s what I found... Ahem... (pause for dramatic effect)... looking back at your past is very, very funny. That, and what seems important to you at the time, might not be so important even a month later - let alone years down the track. For example, much of my ’88 diary was dominated by my first ever serious relationship – with a boy who lived a few streets away. And what a romance it was! We used to catch the bus two suburbs away from school, so we could catch the cool school bus with the rest of our friends. Nuts! Hmmm... Now that I think about it, we were more interested in “going out” than we were about each other. Another favourite 1988 diary moment were the pics from the
Bicentenary party I went to on Australia Day – me, wearing my vintage Levi 501s, Converse All Stars, and a peace necklace - super cool!
Clearly I loved decorating my diary. How much time did I spend doing that instead of algebra? I was also obsessed with watching
21 Jump Street (ahh, Johnny!), talking on the phone for hours (on a landline since nobody had mobiles yet - I don’t know how we survived either!), “borrowing” my sister’s clothes (sorry, Louisa) and reading magazines, of course.
If my diary had a soundtrack it would be a mix-tape filled with
Neneh Cherry, Salt-n-Pepa, Madonna, Public Enemy, INXS, New Order, and the
Dirty Dancing soundtrack. And BTW, I’d love to listen to that even now!
Another of my best memories of 1988 was watching the first ever ep of
Home and Away, so it’s perfect that our cover girl this month is one of our all-time favourite H&A stars,
Indiana Evans. Like H&A, Girlfriend has come a long way since 1988 - thankfully, when you look at some of the crazy fashion shoots in those early issues! Speaking of, looking at all the beautiful fashion in this issue, I can’t wait for summer, just to wear some of the pieces. So, if you love your fashion and a big dose of the ’80s, I think you’ll enjoy this special 20th birthday issue of Girlfriend, as much as we loved making it!
Love,
