Billabong’s global philosophy
‘Be the Change You Want in the World’! This is a challenge for people to live their lives by example and be proactive in creating a more responsible world.
Billabong is committed to raising awareness of environmental or humanitarian causes through specific events or product initiatives as well as the regular inclusion of organic and recycled product in the ranges.
Design for Humanity encourages and promotes awareness of issues relevant to today’s youth and the surf industry at large.
Each season
Design for Humanity items include a mix of recycled PVC backpacks, water bottles made from recycled plastic, organic eco-friendly cotton styles and boardies made from recycled plastic bottles.
These items are every bit as functional and high quality as other items in the range but come with the added benefit of giving something back!
Design for Humanity initiatives raise much needed funds for associated charities, up next is the inaugural charity event in Sydney this February.
And look out mid 2009 for a t-shirt collaboration with Billabong’s latest ambassador, Teen Against Whaling founder
Skye Bortoli...

Recycled BoardiesIt’s the fourth season Billabong have included recycled boardies into the range. These boardies are made form recycled plastic bottles... that’s right, plastic bottles! Each pair saves about 5 bottles from being dumped in landfill, clogging drains or floating in the ocean. The bottles are collected, granulated and dried. Then, through a process known as polymerisation the plastic flakes are made into a polyester fibre, which is then used in the fabric to make the boardies. Pretty cool huh?
Organic TeesOrganic cotton tees are a regular in the Billabong range and always come complete with beautiful graphics. Billabong’s organic cotton is grown using techniques that have a lower impact on the environment than traditional cotton farming. That means no artificial pesticides or fertilizers are used in the farming process so the soil and crop remain “clean”.
