Tiarna's Blog - School's out... now what?

Jul 02 10:30am

There are only three things in this world which frighten me more than Lady Ga Ga’s “ga-ga” leotards and geometric hairstyles, the first obviously being clowns! Who isn’t? Naturally, I admire their ability to apply eye shadow, and replicate Scar-jo’s scarlett pout-that requires talent... Nevertheless, any guy who wears excessive makeup and is not Pete Wentz or Jared Leto, is in serious need of a psychological/beauty therapist! Second on the list are aliens. I don’t care what those 80’s sci-fi Trekkies say…ET is sooo NOT cute. I say, call Telstra, set him up with the new pink Samsung Flip (totally cute) and send the creep home! The third and perhaps most credible of the trio is my fear of the FUTURE!!!

Okay, so I may be overdoing the OMG factor like one of The City girls, but hey, there’s just so much you have to plan for and decide on in life, even if you are still only a 15-16 year old Twitter-lovin’ teenybopper! Sheesh, I spend so much time worrying about making the wrong decisions and dreaming about my future that I’m surprised I can find any time for shoe shopping. There are decisions like…What should I eat for brekkie? Gee, would wearing those faux fur leggings with leather boots on Saturday night qualify me as Mary-Kate’s triplet or a skanky teddy bear? Or more importantly, huge decisions like what should I do when I finish school? It’s scarier than a Tim Burton movie to think that every decision you make could alter the course of your life!

This month I was lucky enough to visit NIDA (the drama school Mel Gibson and Cate Blanchett attended) and the experience, in addition to being super-cali-freakin’-awesome, really opened my aviator-clad eyes to all the wonderful opportunities available to our generation. I was also reminded (as a result of being informed that a mere 24 applicants are chosen to attend NIDA from across Australia *gasp*) that it is essential you are passionate and work hard to achieve your dreams for the future. Whether your dream is to be the next Kate Winslet, a lawyer like the elegant Elle Woods or even a Rubber Injection Moulding Machine Operator (thanks JobGuide) it is best to take some time to chill-ax and determine what you want to achieve both short and long term. ME? I plan on taking over the written world *insert devious laugh here*! BTW Don’t chuck a Britney and psych out if you make a few mistakes along the way. Just because you get a test mark that just about equals Pammy Anderson’s IQ, it doesn’t mean your future is doomed just like her career!

If you are being taken over by fear of future failure like me, remember that forever fearing future failure is about as inconvenient as a wedgie. I’ve decided it’s time to jump out of my straight jacket, reduce my caffeine intake and stress less about what’s around the corner. I now know that if you are determined and embrace the present you will succeed in life. Know what you want and don’t ever fear or doubt your ability to get it!

I'm excited about the future but there is still an element of fear. I have a few big dreams that could either work out or leave me a bit lost. One of them is to spend 6 months in France as part of my gap year. I hope all is well in the world and I'm not stopped from visiting the country I love!

Yes. I'm scared. I have no plans whatsoever but the pressure to go to uni and all that is, well, huge. I think it doesn't matter though, like, you should just do what feels right i spose. I'm not gonna stress myself out or anything, but it still scares me sometimes.

I'm a lil scared bcz my days won't be filled with school - it'll be weird. I'll definetly miss school, but the future is also exciting! Gosh, I can't wait, but to say goodbye to school and to people who I probably wont see until reunion is a bit scary but I'll be fine - I mean, we didnt go through 13 years of school for nothing!!! :)
