The Art of Accessorising

Celebs like Mischa Barton and Sienna Miller are so stylish that it seems they could almost pull off wearing a garbage bag! Lucky for them, they have professional stylists working with them around-the-clock and megabucks to spend on clothes, not to mention the freebies! But thankfully, the clothes don't totally make the outfit, and the good news is that even regular ol' civilians like us can get our hands on what does; it's all about accessories. Of course, there are no rules when it comes to accessorising - a lot depends on personal taste - but here are some hints to help you figure out what it's all about.

Confidence is Key
Follow your instincts and be confident and comfortable in what you wear. No matter how hot something is, if you're uncomfortable wearing it then that is what people see. Take shoes for example; if you're opting for heels make sure that you can walk in them - you want people to notice you because you look fabulous, not because you're walking funny! That said, don't be afraid of attracting attention with your accessories; if you wear them with confidence, you can only receive admiration. So strut your stuff!

Buying Power
When it comes to purchasing, it is best to buy classic pieces that will last you past the season, as well as a few key seasonal items that will keep your look fresh. There are plenty of accessories stores out there now, so shop around. Check out markets and op-shops as well, for original and vintage pieces that are one-of-a-kind.

Complement Your Clothes
Remember, accessories are meant to add to your outfit, not overwhelm it. If your clothes are striking in themselves it is often best to stick with simpler stuff. A good trick is to choose one feature, such as a particular colour, and draw it out with a great handbag or some funky earrings. On the other hand, if your clothes are relatively plain, don't hesitate to add some amazing accessories.

Focal Feature
When accessorising, it can be handy to keep one piece the focus, and let the others complement it. So if you're wearing large, dangly earrings, you can skip the neckwear, but decorate your fingers and wrists. Or if you've got an elaborate necklace, stick with studs or no earrings, and team with a snazzy ring and bracelets instead.

Accessorise Your Mood
Feeling flirty? Go for big hoops or a long piece of bling around your neck. Classy? Keep it simple with studs, basic pendants and minimal bracelets and rings. Want to make a stylish statement? Choose a chunky necklace or an outrageous pair of earrings, and stack up the bangles on your wrist. Think about how you feel and the image you want to project, and accessorise accordingly.

It's all about you
Signature pieces, a la SJP (pictured), are a great way to make YOU standout. Whether it be a necklace, scarf, or flower, a signature piece ensures that your accessories truly speak for you. Mix it up with different looks to ensure a fresh and flexible style.

Trial and Error
The best way to know what works is to experiment. Don't be afraid to try new things, such as layering your jewellery, particularly necklaces and bracelets. Scarfs are great for versatility- tie them around your waist, hips, head, neck, handbag- wherever works! Try different combinations with all your accessories until you get the look you want. Allow yourself time to play around and try different things. And have fun!
