GF: How are you?

VJ: Good Good.

GF: Do you like doing talk Shows? Performing on them?

VJ: Yeah, definitely. (The View) This is my second live TV performance, so I’m really excited about it and I’m singing one of my all time favourite songs from the soundtrack, it’s called “All I Want and Everything”. So, I’m even more excited because I love the song so much.

GF: Wow, that’s so cool. So where is that based? Where are you right now?

VJ: In Los Angeles, California.

GF: Is it afternoon there? Because it’s early morning in Australia.

VJ: Oh yeah, if you are you asking if it’s hot. Yeah, it’s really hot out today. It’s super hot! I think it’s in the 100s F or something.

GF: can you tell us a bit about your role in VICTORiOUS for those who haven’t seen?

VJ: Yeah I play a character named Tori Vega, and I am kinda, not shy, but not very confident when it comes to singing and performing, and I don’t really realised I have talent until I’m forced to perform in this talent show because my sister is not able to. And from there I get accepted by this prestigious performing arts high school called Hollywood Arts, because they see talent in me, and my character is singer, dancer and an actress. When I start going to the school I meet these new people and I make these new friends, and I sing original music and it’s really fun.

GF: Is this something you’ve always wanted to do?

VJ: Ever since I was little I loved music, and I loved acting and preforming, but I think it took some time to gain confidence as far as going up on a stage and singing, and that kind of thing, so I can relate to my character in that way. And we’re also pretty similar because when I moved off to Los Angeles, California I auditioned to get into a performing arts middle school, and I ended up being accepted so I had singing lessons, and dance lessons, and acting lessons for an hour every single day. So I can definitely relate to what my character’s going through.

GF: Aww, Sweet. In terms of confidence, do you have any tips for Girlfriend readers?

VJ: Tips for confidence… I would say, be your own person no mater what, and own who you are. And I think that’s where self-confidence comes from, just like, loving yourself the way you are, loving your body; just being at ease the way you were made.

GF: So why should Girlfriend readers buy this new soundtrackr?

VJ: Well, Girlfriend readers should buy this soundtrack, even if you don’t watch the show, because I feel the music is just really, really good. We have lots of really fun songs, we have some songs that are pop, dance songs that are feel-good numbers, and then we have a ballad called ‘Tell Me That You Love Me’ and it’s a beautiful love song. We have a song that’s more of a relationships song; ‘kinda angry-at-this-guy-a-little-bit, a-little-frustrated’. So I feel like there’s something on there for everyone.

The music’s just really good, and I feel like the lyrics are great. And I love the music and I feel like I have good taste in music so I think other people will like this too.

GF: So talking about music, are there any bands at the moment that you’re obsessed with; constantly listening to?

VJ: I really like Kings of Leon, I think they’re really good. I really like Adele a lot. And there’s a new band called Foster the People, and I think they’re really cool. And Coldplay is one of my all time favourite bands. And of course I like the Beatles, and I like a lot of oldies as well.

GF: Were you at the VMA’s?

VJ: Yeah, I was! I presented Chris Brown’s performance, with Joe Jonas.

GF: Oh cool, what are they like, are they good fun?

VJ: Oh My God, it was so much fun. I feel like it was one of the best shows ever this year. There were so many great performances and there was an amazing Amy Winehouse tribute that made me really happy. And, Bruno Mars sang one my of all time favourite songs by her, called Valerie. I was singing along in the crowd, I think they cut to me for a little bit, you could see me singing the words. But yeah, it was an amazing show, and I was just so honored to be there, and very happy to be apart of it.

GF: So you’ve got to tell me, what’s going on there? Why do people change their seats so often?

VJ: No I think it’s because, like if I’m sitting next to my mom and she gets up to go to the bathroom or something, or gets up to go get something, they’ll put these things called ‘seat fillers’, so if the camera cuts over to you it won’t look like you’re surrounded by empty seats; it’ll look like the place is full, you know

GF: Do they ever talk to you – the seat fillers? Or are they told you’re not allowed to say anything?

VJ: Um, I don’t know, I’ve always talked to the people sitting next to me. [Laughs]

GF: I’m sure you get this a lot, and don’t hate me for asking, but Nina Dobrev looks strikingly similar to you, do you ever get mixed up for her, like on the street by anyone that you come across. Like, “Hey Nina!” Is that something that you’ve noticed?

VJ: I mean, I think online I’ve seen that a lot, and there have been a few magazines that actually put my picture under her name. But yeah I’ve been told that quite a few times, but not that bad. Like people on the street don’t usually come up and say “oh nina”, usually people know it’s me. Because I think we have a similar look, but we don’t really like… I feel like if you see us in person together, and if you really look at us, we don’t really look that much alike, we just have a similar vibe. Brown hair, and brown eyes, and like, tan complexion.

GF: Have you ever met her before?

VJ: I have, I’ve met her a couple times.

GF: And is she nice?

VJ: Yeah, yeah. She was nice. She was very nice. We were both laughing at the fact that we get confused so much. We were like, we should totally put this in a movie then, because we get mixed up so much.

GF: So what is your idea of perfect happiness? What makes you instantly happy?

VJ: I love being at home. Like, if I’ve been travelling a lot, just coming home and having my dog greet me at the door, seeing my family and sleeping in my own bed. That makes me instantly happy. Um, and also taking pictures. I love taking pictures.

GF: And what’s your greatest fear? Do you even have one? Is there anything that scares you?

VJ: I’m like a baby, I’m afraid of scary movies. I can’t watch them at night. And I feel like, because I watched them when I was younger now they’ve scarred me since then and now I’m kind of afraid of the dark. It’s really embarrassing.

GF: And have you been to Australia yet, or is that somewhere you’d love to go?

VJ: No I haven’t been to Australia yet, but I’d love to go! I want to go! I want to learn how to surf, and I want to go snorkeling and scuba diving there. I love that so much, so Australia’s somewhere I really want to visit.

GF: Is there any chance of you coming down soon? Or is that something you’ve got planned?

VJ: I’m not sure right now because my schedule’s been so crazy, but I know you guys have like a Nickelodeon Awards, so I would love to try to come for that. That would be amazing! But we’ll see what happens.

GF: Now what was school like for you? Were you at school, or because of your job, were you always being home-schooled or schooled on set?

VJ: I went to a regular performing arts middle school up until 8th grade, and I was working even when I was going to middle school. And then I went to a normal school until 10th grade, and I was working through that as well. At the beginning of 10th grade was when I started going into production of my show, it was too hard to juggle both, so then I went into home school.

GF: And one last thing, what would you like to say to your Australian fans? Is there anything you’d like to tell them, or thank them?

VJ: I hope they’re enjoying VICTORiOUS and I hope they love the soundtrack as much as I think they will. And I’m really excited to get out there one of these days, and meet everyone and thank them for all of their support. My parting words will be, “put another shrimp on the Barbie”.

GF: [Laughs] Nice. I was worried that my accent would be hard for you to understand.

VJ: No, it’s not that bad. I think it’s just the connection. But you’re accent is not hard to understand, I don’t think.

GF: Phewww. Well, when you do come to Australia, we’ll have to have a face-to-face interview, instead of these dodgy connections. Well, thanks so much Victoria, and I hope you have a nice day, and good luck with your performance on The View. I’m sure I’ll catch it after it’s gone to air… a few days later.
